I honestly didn't think I would love this book as much as I did! My friend at work first told me about it after reading it before it really exploded, then my cousin told me about it soon after. I always give anything a shot once, so I figured why not. I was completely sucked into the story from the start. I really loved the story and the characters but the writing irked me sometimes. It seemed like she would use much bigger words than necessary to make it sound better but it just took away from the story. Especially if you're really into the part of the story you're reading and then you have to figure out what a crazy word means to continue reading.
This series either gets loved or hated, I don't think there was an inbetween for most people. I really loved the characters and the story line and not to be cliche, but Christian Grey. He really is one of the most complex characters I've read about in quite some time, which eventually gets him the nickname Fifty. I love how much he grows to love Ana and is willing to change for her and try to better himself.
I was conflicted during some parts of the story because I would get annoyed with the characters. Christian would bother me because of how controlling he is and just his rules, both his dom/sub rules and just his rules for daily life. But Ana also irked me because she knew how he was and his temper/personality type but would purposely do things to get under his skin and make him mad and would then turn it and get mad at him for being mad. I understand it's good that she did this because then he would just have completely control over her if she didn't take some of it back. But it just bothered me how mad she would get when she knew what his reaction would be every time.
Another obvious point is the similarities between Fifty Shades of Grey and Twilight. It's a known fact now that E.L. James first wrote this book as a Twilight fanfiction. There are maaaany similarities between the two. Him being "bad" and her needing to stay away from him but he can't stay away from her, her being this quiet, little, sweet virgin who becomes basically addicted to him, him having all adopted siblings by wealthy parents with one being a doctor. Even her friend Jose can be compared to Bella's best friend Jacob Black.
The series even take place in the same state. Even though there are many, many similarities there are also a lot of differences, other than the fact that Christian isn't a vampire and Edward isn't into S&M.
I didn't expect the ending at all because Ana was always so willing to do as he wanted and to try new things for him. So when she decided to leave I was so shocked, I had to buy the next book on my nook right after I finished reading to find out what would happen next.
